Headed to Nepal

Ya know, I'm doing it for me. I know, it's for them as well. The kids. The facilitators of the orphanage too. But let's get real. It's for me.

I have this yearning in my soul to do SOMEthing. To be a part of something bigger than myself. To give back for all of the abundance I have. A lot of it I have because I happened to be born a white, blonde, blue-eyed, American female in 1969 to parents who could afford to pay my way to college.

I'm not exactly sure why I have this yearning. I think partly it comes from not having a child of my own. Not having that 'someone else' in my life that all of my attention goes to. If I'm not going to have my own child, how can I serve children all over the world who don't have mothers, fathers, families, or homes? I might not have much money to give, but I have my time, my energy, some skills, and my heart.

I was just reading about the Forbes 400 Philanthropy Summit. David Rubenstein, one of the worlds foremost philanthropists and billionaire said, "The ancient word philan, for philanthropy, as the Greeks invented it, had nothing to do with giving away money. Philanthropy means love of humanity, love of people."

So, we can all be philanthropists. We can all express our love of humanity and love of people through giving back. I don't think you have to go on an exotic trip across the globe, but it just so happens that I love to travel. And yes, I realize how self-serving that also is. But here I am, being really honest with you. Like I said, it's for me.

I don't quite know what's in store on this journey. I'll be traveling with Elayne to an orphanage called the Bright Horizons Children's Home outside of Kathmandu. Elayne will be leading a trauma healing train-the-trainer workshop and I'll be her assistant. I'm not an expert in trauma healing. I'm just willing to learn, listen and bring all of myself. I think showing up is the most important step. Then life leads us down the path.

I'll be sharing what happens along the way, and my intention is to be as real and honest as I can with you as I do. And hopefully, out of this sharing I can contribute to your life in some way.

Please let me know what you think by posting a comment below. I'd love to hear from you.

Blessings and love to you,

Kim
